DETAILS
  • The LZ-127 ("Graf Zeppelin") did a tour of the Baltic, proceeding to Tallin and Helsinki after the Riga fly-over. Over each city it would drop a packet of souvenir "Air Mail" letters, an example of which can be seen in the last frame above.
  • This flight had actually been scheduled a number of times before, but had to be cancelled due to weather conditions. Previous cancelled dates included August 10, 1930, August 20, 1930 and September 8/9, 1930.
  • On September 11, 1930 a German airship did overfly Latvian territoru (near Daugavpils) en route to and from Moscow. When the airship crossed into Soviet air space, Latvian border guards reported that the Soviet border guards had opened fire upon it. Later, these were explained as "gunshots of salute".
